The DC metro area welcomes a new unisex salon & spa: The Ivy Lounge

On January 18th, we had the pleasure of attending an exclusive VIP and Media preview for the new unisex salon and spa.  The Ivy lounge is a full service multicultural establishment that welcomes the diversity of clientele it is sure to receive being nestled in the heart of downtown Hyattsville, Maryland. As a welcomed addition to the PG county corridor you can see the vivacity that this upscale salon and spa has already brought to the area.

The event was hosted by WPGC 95.5’s Guy Lambert and CBS Big Brother season 15 contestant, Candice Stewart.

Upon arrival guests were greeted and checked in by event curators from Dash Coordinating & Marketing, LLC. The afternoons’ affairs were beautifully orchestrated as everyone mixed and mingled taking in the ambiance of the luxurious space. Throughout the event guest were treated to passed hour’derves from Paris Catering company; they were also welcomed to partake in wine from the complimentary open wine bar.

In addition to beautiful wood bamboo-style painted cabinets; framing an assortment of top of the line hair care products, the Ivy lounge is equipped with state of the art appliances and furnishings housed in the manicure bar, message lounge, and dryer saloon.  The spa offers reasonably priced services including salon styling, facial grooming, waxing, nail care, Deep Tissue and Swedish massage therapy [just to name a few]. As mentioned at the event, in the near future Ivy Lounge plans to offer additional medi-spa services to include body sculpting and Botox.

Ivy Lounge’s team of talented stylists treated guest to an amazing hair show featuring signature salon styles.

Ivy Lounge owner Dr. Fadayomi hosted a series of giveaways and door prizes during the evening including his most noteworthy giveaway to a mother and daughter who were  victims of a second homicide. He gifted Mrs. Weathers and her daughter (China) a complimentary makeover including hair, makeup and nail spa services. He also made a special charitable contribution by donating hair care products and other items to the Enchanting Women Foundation in support of their mission to help disadvantaged teens, battered women, homeless women and women-owned businesses.

The Media preview and VIP reception was a fun-filled event with many beautiful people in attendance including a few local and national beauty queens. If you’re looking for a one stop shop in the heart of the Hyattsville community Ivy Lounge is the place to go!

Serving the community with Tony Lewis Jr., Sons of Life, Kitchen Cray and many more at the #DCorNothing Turkey Drive

Last Saturday at Bar 7, the DC or Nothing team hosted a Turkey Drive  that helped provide thanksgiving meals for families in need living in underserved communities in DC. Upon arrival volunteers were handed off to stations by members of the DC or Nothing and Sons of Life teams. Participants brought bags of groceries bursting at the brim filled with an assortment of canned and boxed items. I was on bagging duties  (in between capturing a few shots) in which I helped organize items in groups along the bar and doubled up bags to be distributed. We developed a great system and I had bags moving like clockwork. The experience was a lot of fun!

It was truly heart warming to see that so many individuals showed up and showed out for the DC community. Most of the crowd was filled with young  career professionals which really excited me. Often times people say that “young people need to get more involved” but their was certainly no shortage of that at this event.

As always, Kitchen Cray came through and did their thing by providing made-to-order omelettes and other food to event volunteers.

Tossed in the crowds of people were a few notable DC taste makers and trendsetters including Elite DC Mag CEO, Anwaa Kong; DJ Mims; VA Rapper, Black Cobain; and DC Socialite, Adria Woods.  The event was great and Kitchen Cray did a phenomenal job at feeding and interacting with guests and volunteers.

At the close of the event Mr. Tony Lewis Jr. gave a speech and invited everyone to continue the efforts and follow him over to Tyler house apartments to spread more cheer and hand out additional turkeys and bags of food. The Tyler house is a government subsidized community just north of union station that has been ravished with crime and in need of much assistance. I wasn’t able to make it to the Tyler house [because of another engagement] however it is good to see that the community is safe in the hands of Tony Lewis, Jr., Sons of life, DC or nothing and countless others

[Street Intell Rewind] Santasha’s Style’s presents the 2nd Annual ‘Natural Hair and Body Expo’

On Saturday, October 26th members of the Street Intell street team attended Santasha’s 2nd Annual Natural Hair and Body Expo at the Dumfries Youth Center in Dumfries, Virginia.

Partnered with the Military Natural Hair group Santasha put together a fun filled and educational affair featuring live hair care demonstrations by author and Natural Hair guru Karen Wilson.

The military Natural Hair group  is a group dedicated to supporting U.S. Armed Forces past and present who care about, have or are transitioning to wearing natural hair. They offer a place to share stories, encouragement, experiences, hair styles, regimens, products, and more. Their goal is to support natural  hair journeys and still serve their country honorably.

Upon arrival to the venue guest’s were greeted by Santasha’s team. Each guest received a swag bag full of goodies. If they participated in the Satasha Quarles program and brought in slightly used or new hair care products [for military personnel overseas] each person received a free Street Intell ‘Good Hair’ tote. During the event guest were serenaded by a live band that provided a nice musical backdrop to the event. Some guest partook in skin care regimens and live demonstrations by Constance Glow.

There were an array of vendors at the event including our dear friends Todd and Vicki from Todd Parson’s earrings. It was great seeing them once more and we’re happy and excited to hear about their newly formed union.

We also interviewed a few vendors onsite to find out a bit about their experiences as business owners.

A lot of the vendors were independent distributors of many specialty products. For instances, we spoke to a representative from Seacrets, a brand that specializes in natural body scrubs, sea salt mineral peels, and skin care cleansers. We met and spoke with actor and Martial arts instructor Cliff Cunningham who explained the concept behind  the self defense commercial and brand Deadly dymes. Deadly dymes produces a series of videos showcasing fight choreography that  demonstrates proper safety tactics for women in self defense. Most of the tactics displayed were based on Judo, Tai Chi, Mui Tai (Kick boxing) and other martial arts. Along with promotion of Safety tips Cliff was selling safety kits equipped with pepper spray and  15 million voltage stunt gun.

The 2nd annual Hair and Body expo was a great event and it was nice that Santasha decided to bring that kind of event to the Woodbridge, Manassas and Dumfries naturals. Often times many of them have to venture into DC which sometimes isn’t that convenient. Looking forward to next years event and we want to thank Santasha Quarles and the military naturals group for allowing us to take part in the event.

[Street Intell Rewind] Interview w/ @TarenGuy at #LLYHtourDC !!!

It was such a pleasure meeting and speaking with Taren. She has such a great personality and warm spirit. The DC event was packed to the brim with Naturalistas eager and willing to learn how to better maintain and love their hair. The Motions hair staff was a pleasure to work with and provided great support. Back stage in the green room we chatted it up with Taren and waited as the motions hair models and featured blogger panelists got ready. The hair models all looked stunning and their tresses were maintained and transformed by NYC stylist Jennifer Rose.

For those of you that aren’t familiar, Taren Guy is a vlogger based out of New York city, she is one of the leading natural hair [YouTube] vloggers on the internet right now. Since 2009, Taren has been sharing her hair journey and informing women through product reviews, styling tips and personal inspiration. She provides valuable knowledge to her audience that allows everyone to see [through her experience] that it is possible to love and learn your hair. Her love and appreciation for natural beauty has captivated an audience of over one hundred thousand subscribers. She continues to make strides as she tours around the US and abroad. We wish her continued success and look forward to more things to come!

Excuse the mispronunciation of Taren’s name. /Təˈren/ is the accurate pronunciation. Every now and then the immigrant in me slips out. Hope you enjoyed this feature! 🙂
