Street Intell has joined on with our fellow Street Intellectual, Ms. Senya D. to support her campaign: The New American Girl.

The “New American Girl” campaign is aimed at rebranding the traditional “American Girl” image. The New American Girl has been infused with global culture and she is a citizen of the World. Senya hopes to use this movement to encourage girls to love themselves, stand up, and reclaim their own definitions of beauty.

Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder, but if we learn to be beholden to our own beauty, we recognize that true beauty begins with self-love. Everyday we see the same images of what the media deems as beautiful. It is time for people to stand tall and reclaim their own definition of beautiful.

Pharrell Dons a Traditional Headress for Elle UK and Leaves a lot of Fans UN “Happy”

Super producer, song writer, author, culture curator and fashion maverick Pharrell Williams has never shied away from pushing the envelope.

However, it appears this time he may have pushed it too far.

On the most recent (special edition) July cover of Elle UK magazine, the “Happy” singer dons a traditional Indian headdress that appears to be quite fitting.

The headdress accentuates his immaculate bone structure and highlights all of his God-given sexiness—wooo! Excuse me as I digress.

Famous for his headgear, Pharrell has been rocking a variety of hats including his infamous “Smokey the Bear” high top fedora [designed by Vivienne Westwood ] but his most recent choice has landed him in a bit of hot water.

As many know fashion tends to draw inspiration from different cultural styles from around the world and often industry professionals straddle the thin lines between love it or hate it.

Many are concerned because the Indian headdress is an exclusive and ceremonial gift bestowed upon chiefs and warriors of a tribe.

To see Pharrell donned in such a culturally significant article, seems almost like a mockery of the scared Indian tradition.

The cover has many people wondering, where the cultural sensitivity is in this matter.

Not to worry, Pharrell made a statement apologizing for his fashion Fopaux:

“I respect and honor every kind of race, background and culture. I am genuinely sorry.”

Now this leads to the bigger picture of how the fashion industry (and beyond) uses culture as a costume.

Quvenzhané Wallis is the new ambassador for Armani Junior

Quvenzhané Wallis has been rapidly making her ascent.

The 10-year-old child star known notably for her Oscar nominated role in Beasts of the Southern Wild has quickly been adding lots of firsts to her resume.

Not only has she been stamped as the youngest to ever receive an Academy Award nomination, she has since moved on to become the official ambassador for Italian designer, Giorgio Armani.

Her campaign marks the first time a child star has been chosen to represent the line.

Although only but so young Quvenzhané is constantly working— making an appearance in the award winning drama, 12 Years a Slave.

Wallis was more recently casted as the lead role in the reboot musical film Annie —alongside co-stars Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, which is set to premiere later this year.

We’re excited for all her accomplishments and can’t wait to see more amazing opportunities develop in her future.

Alexander Wang’s Collaboration with H&M

Yes the rumors are true! The phenomenal Designer, Alexander Wang is collaborating with the Swedish fashion forward company H&M. The breaking news was announced Saturday, midnight EST to the designer’s Instagram with a video showing a countdown to “Wang X HM” on a basketball scoreboard. The time was stopped at 11:06, which most likely means the collection will be released and hitting the stores November 6, 2014. Even though this is Wang’s first major collaboration, the designer has been the creative director of Balenciaga since 2012. Therefore I’m expecting nothing but breathtaking designer pieces to be created. This is all coming together and making sense why the designer is throwing a secret joint soiree with H&M which is taking place next to H&M’s annual invite only bash at Coachella. Great way to celebrate! Mark your calendars because this collection is one you don’t want to miss.
